Course Outline
Finding Creative Inspiration through the Beauty of Printed Fabrics
Vintage Floral Fancies begins with a rich exploration of floral imagery in embroidery, drawing inspiration from historical and contemporary textile artists, printed fabrics, wallpapers, and decorative arts. We look closely at how flowers have been stylised, interpreted, and transformed through stitch, colour, and texture, encouraging you to observe with intention and curiosity.
You’ll be able to:
-Identify key visual characteristics of textile designs and motifs in printed fabrics
-Research textile & embroidery artists for inspiration and ideas
-Develop your own aesthetic & creative style through selection and collection of printed fabrics
-Analyse floral & geometric motifs for stitch potential, scale, and composition
-Build a personal reference library of printed fabrics to inform your embroidery designs
The Joy of Colour
Before moving to Paris, Rebecca was an award-winning Art teacher and she will share her love of beauty with an introduction to colour theory. We will learn how to work harmoniously with printed fabrics, exploring contrast, balance, and subtle tonal shifts. We discuss how to select suitable base fabrics, assess print scale, and plan stitch placement so that embroidery enhances rather than overwhelms the design.
You’ll be able to:
-Apply colour theory to embroidery projects. Use this knowledge to design your own gorgeous colour schemes with confidence. No more hesitating over which colour, shade, tint or tone of embroidery floss to use!
-Choose printed fabrics that complement your creative vision. Enjoy the pleasures of selecting a printed fabric to embroider and embellish while considering motifs, repeat patterns and scale.
-Plan embroidery designs that balance fabric, colour, & stitch with confidence.
-Avoid embarking on projects that overwhelm and remain unfinished!
Exploring Texture with Embroidery Stitches & Embellishment
This section focuses on creating depth, texture, and movement through stitch. You will be guided through a variety of embroidery techniques, including needle painting, to capture the softness of petals, the structure of leaves, and the richness of floral forms. Emphasis is placed on developing sensitivity to thread weight, stitch direction, and layering.
You’ll be able to:
-Render texture through embroidery stitches
-Select and plan stitches with confidence and creativity
-Use stitch techniques to create realistic and expressive texture
-Apply needle painting methods to floral motifs using the Long & Short stitch
-Control stitch direction, density, and thread choice for visual impact
Sparkling Embellishment & Finishing Touches
A little bit of sparkle can illuminate an embroidery when used correctly! We will explore the thoughtful use of embellishment—metallic threads, beads, sequins, and decorative details—learning how to add illumination, sparkling details - without overpowering the design. Finishing techniques are also covered, helping you bring your embroidered piece to a polished and cohesive conclusion.
You will be able to:
-Understand how to incorporate embellishments with confidence and balance
-Add beads and sequins using haute couture techniques
-Embroider the famously temperamental metallic threads with ease and eventually, joy!
-Enhance embroidery with decorative details that support the design and illuminate your work through light, colour and movement.
Developing Confidence, Personal Style & Creative Voice
The final class encourages reflection, evaluation, and personal expression. Rebecca will present the inspiring work of former students and you will be supported in assessing your work, recognising your strengths, and developing confidence in your creative decisions. The focus is on cultivating an individual style and trusting your artistic instincts.
You’ll be able to:
-Design and embroider your own beautiful printed fabric
-Bring together colour, pattern, texture, stitch, and embellishment in beautiful embroideries
-Enjoy confidence in your creative decision-making
-Evaluate your own work and know when you have added the final touch to a finished piece!
